Reducing poverty in Guatemala's Mayan communities through education

Programs

Scholarship Program

Each student accepted into the Scholarship Program receives tuition for a school year (10 months) paid directly to the school to ensure the student is enrolled and able to attend. The student must show outstanding test scores, a capacity for learning, and a desire to finish their education.

Program participants also have access to other Sueños y Esperanzas programs and special activities.

We-Connect: Computer Lab Program

Technology classes are provided each week as well as access to computers so students can complete school assignments.

Sueños y Esperanzas coordinates with local public library and schools when these organizations need access to computers and internet, provides technology classes and exposure to technology for the first time (or one-on-one tutoring) to Scholarship Program participant family members, and allows high school students not in the Scholarship Program access to the lab.

Abejitas (Little Bees) Program

Sueños y Esperanzas began to provide nutrition, health and learning opportunities to elementary students in 2021. Preparing these students to continue their education into middle and high school is a primary goal of this program. Staff and volunteers provide the children with a safe place to have a nutritious snack/meal, learn, play and grow at the Center at least twice each week.

Parent Counseling Program

Sueños y Esperanzas created the Parent Counseling Program in 2020 to provide training and counseling for parents as they navigate having children going to school when they expected to have the child working to support the family and breaking the tradition of leaving school early for marriage or parenthood.  Program staff helps parents understand the school demands placed on the student as well as what kinds of jobs the student can have once they finish high school.

Healthy Living Program

The Healthy Living Program teaches students and parents the importance of focusing on physical health.  The Sueños y Esperanzas Center offers a safe and clean place for program participants to play and learn about healthy living.  Program staff offer session topics such as physical fitness, nutrition, dental hygiene, infectious disease prevention, the impact of substance abuse, and female reproductive health.

Community Assistance Program

Sueños y Esperanzas has great community partners who have supported food distribution and the building of vented stoves for families living in extreme poverty. Food distribution has become very important as food costs have risen. Vented stoves (vented to outside of the home) replace open flame cooking inside the home. One outcome of use of vented stoves is improved respiratory health.

Emotional Support Program

Counseling services for program participants provided by a licensed psychologist helps students handle the stress of school, family and the effects of living in poverty. Sueños y Esperanzas staff know that mental and physical health go hand in hand with what is being taught in the classroom.
